Dealing with Post Acute Withdrawal during Drug Rehab by Meekah Tomlinson
Clinical drug rehab has rapidly advanced over the last several decades. Because of advancements in psychology and neuroscience, drug rehab specialists have been able to create a wide array of proven methods for treating addiction and ensuring long-term sobriety.
However, there are still several factors which threaten addicts’ recoveries. The most dangerous is Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome, or PAWS – a condition which sets in immediately after the withdrawal symptoms of detoxification subside. PAWS symptoms are reported by almost all rehab patients, and it is the number one cause of relapse among recovering addicts.
These symptoms include:
*Persistent drug cravings
*Cravings for other substances, especially food
*Depression
*Social Anxiety
*Paranoia
*Schizophrenic behavior patterns
*Difficulty communicating with others
*Chronic acute pain and sensitivity to pain
*Short-term memory loss
*Feelings of guilt and worry
*Inability to focus
*Constant overreaction or under-reaction to emotional problems or daily events
*Insomnia
*Inappropriately high stress levels
*Lack of motor skills
One of the most difficult aspects of suffering from such symptoms is that PAWS victims often appear to be actively abusing drugs or alcohol – a phenomenon which has led sober addicts to be called “dry drunks.” Observers who are unfamiliar with PAWS often assume that recovering addicts are actually experience relapse. This can be extremely frustrating for drug rehab patients who are struggling to remain clean.
These symptoms are also troubling because they can interfere with rehab therapies themselves. Counseling sessions, group discussions, and other common treatment methods are already emotionally and mentally trying for rehab patients. Suffering from PAWS can make it impossible for people to cope with their drug cravings enough to fully engage their treatments.
Thankfully, most clinics are starting to make PAWS management a top priority in their inpatient, outpatient, and partial hospitalization programs. The following are some of the ways in which addicts can mitigate the symptoms.
*Communication – Addicts can discuss their problems with rehab clinicians, other addicts, or friends they have made as a result of their therapies.
*Friendly but honest feedback – PAWS sufferers often find it useful to vent about their emotional problems, even if they seem irrational. Trusted friends and family members can help them by listening – but they also must be honest about the reality of situations. Addicts must learn when they are being unreasonable so that they can adjust their thoughts and behaviors accordingly.
*Purposeful Living – Because they often feel hopeless or unfocused, PAWS sufferers often find relief in setting daily goals and searching for the important purposes in their lives.
*Physical Health – Proper nutrition is essential for high energy levels, and vigorous exercise can help elevate good-mood hormones. By maintain great physical healthy addicts with PAWS can improve their mental and emotional states.
*Rest – When post acute withdrawal symptoms become too much to bear, many rehab patients find it necessary to take time off from the stressful aspects of their lives. Addicts may have to focus less on careers, friends, and even family members in order to avoid stress-related relapses.
PAWS is a serious and troubling condition, but it can be effectively managed. Almost every addict reports some of its symptoms after detox, yet thousands make lasting recoveries each year.
